Many of us are hesitant to move into the online space to build a business because we think we’re not good enough. We see all these incredibly successful people and are certain we never could be as successful as they are.
Take a few moments to think about the skills you utilize in your current job. Jot them down on a piece of paper if you’d like. Feeling stuck? Consider keeping a notepad at work and every time you recognize yourself doing a really great job at something, write it down.
- Did you just diffuse a situation between two of your team members? You have strong mediation skills and are a leader. Write it down.
- Did you just guide a client through successfully bringing their company from drowning in debt to thriving financially, debt free? You have excellent financial sense and are a driver of success. Write it down.
- Did you just help a client navigate the grief of losing a loved one so they were able to go back to work after traumatic loss? You connect and empathize with others and are an encourager. Write it down.
- Did you just craft a proposal that was accepted for a huge project? You have strong sales skills and are a persuasive communicator. Write it down.
- Did you just bring smiles and laughter to a room full of children, helping them enjoy learning and succeed in their scholastic endeavors? You are a light in people’s lives and a supporter. Write it down.
- Did you just help a patient navigate a health crisis and guide them to a healthier lifestyle so they can watch their grandchildren grow up? You are intelligent and kind and are a motivator. Write it down.
See what I’m getting at?
Next, think about how you could use those skills elsewhere. Don’t think about how you would actually build an online business quite yet; just think about how you could use your current skills, combine them with a passion you have, and use that to meet a need. What is a problem you see that you could provide a solution for?
This is the core of an online business: combining your passion and skills to address a market need in order to create something people will buy in the online space.
